In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA), also known as S. 3804, was introduced. The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a markup Nov. 18 where they are looking to pass the bill.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China and Iran do, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed from the internet and not just in the US. So, the US gov't's decision on which sites to remove WILL affect even the people outside of the US!

Please see the following article from the Huffington Post for more information.
Stop the Internet Blacklist!

And if you are a US citizen, please take the time to sign this petition: (Even if you're not a US citizen, please sign it anyway!)
Demand Progress!

Also for US citizens, you can email your Senator and tell him or her your concerns about this bill. To find out who are the senators of your state and their contact information, you can visit the U.S. Senate website, by clicking here:
http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm

PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD AND STOP THE CENSORSHIP!

Wtf, united states, this is taking it a step beyond rational and maybe even a step down from intelligent. Is it me, or will this just make sure that the American government will make no more money off of server costs.

The American government cannot delete sites hosted outside their country,I assume. This would be a matter of international law. This would lead to further debts as the revenue made off this would no longer be gained. The government would certainly try to delete 4chan for hosting random files, including (very time limited) illegal content.

Move files to servers abroad = soblem prolved for the site, am I right?

This as well as the fact that censorship is the first sign of a country gone awful (nazi Germany was the last time anything was censored in this way in Europe, but I'm not going to make a Godwin here) leads to seeing that this is rediculous! Where will it end? Who will say which sites get deleted? What kind of sites will get deleted? Aren't Americans so very proud of their first amendment?

Don't get Chinafied, little America!

And they're the ones asking every other country out there to be more democratic and to open their media. PFFTTTTT!!!

I blame the lobbies for this. That do so on behalf of the music and recording industry. Just because you won't REFUSE change your marketing methodologies doesn't mean the rest of us must suffer.

It's already really controversial however, NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT IT. It's just two more days until they hold another hearing in an attempt to pass the bill. Please spread the word about it as much as you can and get people to sign the petition or email their senators if they live in the US!

VICTORY! As announced to anybody who signed the petition by E-mail. The bill has indeed gone through to the senate, but VW's title seems to have missed that the democratic senator Ron Wyden from Oregon has announced to "take any steps necessary to stop this bill from passing the senate".
His opposition has declared the bill dead for this year.
Next year, however, they might try to recreate this bill. The matter here is that democratic senator from Hollywood, California, has said that even she is afraid of the censorship.

Can anybody tell my why only democrats are responding against this bill in a country that loves its first amendment so much? Why are the more 'conservatives' who say that burning a koran in the name of this amendment is fine, not speak up against censorship? Why do they not oppose a giant step towards 'big government'? Censorship was last seen in any western country while it was communist? Why are these republicans so damn hypocritical?

Please carry on this discussion, as it is important.

I posted that from an article dated from the 18th.
This one is from the 19th.  :o

A day makes a difference.

Be careful about counting victory before the battle is over, however. This is not completly dead, just resting. It will very likely come back.

Also...

A U.S. senator has vowed to fight attempts to pass a controversial copyright protection bill that would allow the U.S. government to shut down websites suspected of hosting infringing materials.
